Learning Goal: I’m working on a health & medical question and need guidance to help me learn.
Access to services provided can sometimes be difficult for participants to find out about. There are internal barriers and external barriers that cause people to be unable to access the services. Two eternal barriers that can potentially prevent people from accessing services are problems in living and also problems in the modern world. One can not control problems in living or problems in the world. The text used and example of a young teen who became pregnant due to guidance lacking in the home. She had no control over those circumstances. She had a lack of support which caused her to lack access to services early on. After becoming pregnant she began to learn more about services available to her. Problems in the world sometimes causes a lack of services to people because the services become exhausted due to the demand of certain services.
To list 2 internal barriers, mental health and pride can cause barriers to people. People with mental health issues cannot always advocate for themselves. They can’t always say what they need and don’t have to access to get the services. Some people hate to admit the need for services. Some people develop shame and are embarrassed because they don’t want anyone to know that they are receiving services.
People in the human services profession can help by offering social care, social control and rehabilitation (Woodside, M LO 1-5). They can assist clients in getting the services they need, they can use services offered by combining with other workers to rehabilitate people back into the lifestyle or mental capacity they had previously.

When it comes to two internal barriers that I believe prevent people from finding and using human services, there are two that can be mentioned. The first is the lack of knowledge. I think for someone who doesn’t really know what is going on and how to do something, they will just keep to themselves and try to do things on their own. For some people this can be embarrassing to ask for help. This leads me into my second internal barrier, and that is simply pride. Some people may see it as being hard headed. I personally know people that don’t like asking for help, let alone seeing a doctor. Once upon-a-time, I used to be similar to that. I used to didn’t like taking medicine, as I thought it tasted nasty. I would just find my own remedies to get better. I’ve broken out of that since then and I take all the medicine I need.
When it comes to two external barriers that prevent people from finding and using human services, there are also two that can be mentioned. The first barrier is the lack of funding. Many human service programs tend to lack the proper funding to continue, so many people/clients are left without the help they need. The second barrier is reputation. Many times, for whatever reasons, people can give something a bad name or rep. This is a “monkey-see-monkey-do” world we live in, and all it takes is for a few people to get talking and it can cause many problems for that business.
One more added barrier is communication. To me, this can be internal and external, depending on how you look at it. “The presence of languages other than English in US society has always been controversial, stemming from concerns that a large presence of bilingual and non-English speakers threatens to divide the country’s population along linguistic and cultural lines.” (Garcia, 2019). People who speak a different language may feel embarrassed that they will not sound right or say that wrong thing. I’ve personally seen this happen to someone.
The simple answer to why I think these barriers exist is because there are a lot of people who need help, and there are not many workers available to provide that help. I saw so many people quit the healthcare field during this pandemic, and it’s only going to get worse.
Roles of a human service professional related to helping someone should always be positive. According to (Woodside, 2017), a human service worker should aim to help their clients with care, control, and eventually, rehab. This means that they must approach each situation well prepared and with the understanding of human development, being well-organized, and following proper procedure at all times.

When thinking of what multicausality is, it is pretty much that having multiple causes is a single problem. As a human service worker, it is my job to deal with many things at one time, because that is one of the ways I help find a solution. Once multicausality comes into prominence, certain issues arise. Two are particularly prominent: direct and indirect causality and cognition. (Warfield, 2008). An example of this is if someone who does drugs everyday due to anxiety and depression, they don’t work, and have no way of getting there because they have to always ask for rides, they live in a neighborhood where there are people who also do drugs and participate in gang activities. There are a plethora of things going on here. There isn’t just one cause to the problem.
Hello, I’m Mr. Hawkins, and I work for Humane Health Services. My client name is Sarah Wilson who is 42 years of age, and works at her local Walmart. Sarah works so much that she doesn’t have time to keep her house properly cleaned. On her days off she likes to grab a six pack of beer to do what she calls “relax” after a long day at work. She also smokes about 1/2 packs of cigarettes per day. One day Sarah woke up and her dog was lying dead on the floor of her home. He died of lung issues, which the doctors still don’t know how this happened. Since the passing, Sarah has been excessively drinking alcohol daily and smoking 2 packs of cigarettes per day. I can definitely understand how she feels, as dogs are the most loyal and trustworthy animals on this earth. She chose to drink alcohol, as she felt that it would numb the pain. She hasn’t been in contact with her job, as she has missed 5 days straight now. Before the passing of her dog, she was already struggling with her finances, and was looking to get a part time job to make up some of her wages. Now, her missing time from her first job isn’t going to make things any better. Her depression has been so bad she couldn’t even call her job or family members. She also lives in an unsafe neighborhood.
Two possible problems for the passing of her dog, is the cigarette smoke and an unclean house. Smoking is not good anyway, so when you excessively smoke around pets, that could be a problem. Also, she doesn’t make time to clean her house, and the bad odor could have also played a role in what happened to the dog.
As far as I think this intervention is enough to address the problem’s causes, I do not. We never know how we are going to grieve whenever we lose a loved one. We all deal with the pain, but some people deal with it a bit differently. As far as Sarah, this has become a problem. She is doing damage to her life and body. Excessive alcohol consumption and smoking is bad, especially 2 packs per day. Plus, she lives in an unclean environment. She could cause other damages like lung cancer and heart damage. Although we are here to provide the service of Sarah’s well-being, there are other specialists that can help her in the other areas that we can’t. She should definitely be seen by a psychologist and be admitted to a drug and alcohol prevention program.

The scenario I chose to better illustrate multicausal, is the following. 22 years old male by name of Jamal is struggling with a drug addiction problem. He has two children with two different woman who are collecting child support from Jamal. Due to his drug addiction he has had problems with the law and has been arrested before restricting him from having a good job. 95% of his paycheck goes to his two baby mothers and only sees about 5% of his hard earned money. In order to get some extra income without the system taxing his pay check he has to sell drugs. The profits made from his side hustle are used to party and engage in unprotected adult activities with other woman. with the use of drugs and alcohol, judgements impaired, Jamal is prone to repeating the mistake of getting another woman pregnant and dive deeper in the illegal street pharmacist business. Jamal has did a wrong transaction and was caught by the Police and is now facing possession of illegal substances which caused him to miss a lot of hours at his job and is now unable to pay child support.
Problems identified in this scenario are the following: Drug and alcohol abuse, lack of responsibilities to his children and lack of regards for the law or the his personal future. Ways to change Jamal life around is to introduce him to a different kind of lifestyle. Change up the environment. If Jamal is no longer exposed to the night life, drugs and woman and focus on making fast money to have sex with other woman, he could be on good terms with his baby mothers, go for a trade school or certificate to get a better job so that he is not stuck having to use outside illegal resources that will be drag him deeper in the hole of society. Although Jamal has ended up in prison, it does not means it is necessarily the end for him. This will give him the opportunity to placed in an “involuntary placement in the system” (Woodside & McClam) which will offer him with resources and ideas on how to live a different life and take on new crafts as well as being a functional member of society.
