This essay is in two parts. Each part must be completed. The essay is a single paper but, make sure that your essay is marked Part One and Part Two.

Your name, assignment title, Course/Instructor, University in the upper left hand corner. Double spaced, use simple forms of in-text citation, ex. (Ziker, 2002). Or (Welsch & Vivanco, 2015) etc. Use Chicago Style as your works cited and in-text citation formatting. You will be evaluated on your use of in-text citations and works cited page being in the appropriate format and proper usage throughout essay. Length of paper: minimum of 8 pages, maximum of about 12 pages, depending on your detail.

To answer each part of the essay you must use what you have been learning from Welsch & Vivanco to interpret the Peoples of the Tundra Ethnography by Ziker. The purpose of this essay is to determine how well you can use the material from Welsch & Vivanco in analyzing the ethnographic material in the Peoples of the Tundra book. For example, we have now covered Culture, Ethnography, Foodways, Environmental Anthropology, and Economics (among others) in the Welsch & Vivanco textbook. You should be able to take this newly acquired knowledge to interpret what Ziker is saying and answer the questions below.

Part One: Major Findings of Ziker’s ethnography. 75 points

What did the author find out about the Dolgan and Nagassan people?

Describe and discuss his findings and expand on their meanings using Welsch & Vivanco.

Use examples and citations from Welsch & Vivanco and Ziker.

Part Two: The textbook and the ethnography. 75 points

What is the significance of the textbook (Welsch & Vivanco) in understanding this ethnography by Ziker?

How does the data, concepts, theories presented in the textbook apply to the material in Zikers ethnography?

Explain! Give examples! Use citations.

As a guide, choose 2 or 3 aspects of culture from the following list to discuss. [aprox. evaluation guide 25 pts each. = 75 pts]

Include definitions, functions, examples, etc. Don’t forget to include Welsch & Vivanco in your discussions of definitions and functions.

Subsistence: Geography, climate, hunting, division of labor, food sharing, season’s, etc.
Economics: Climate, hunting, food distribution etc,
Kinship: Family/clan holdings, territories, laws, ownership, fertility, alcoholism etc.

Information on what I am looking for in your essay:

Do not get personal, remain objective, do not compare to U.S. culture unless absolutely relevant.

This essay tests your ability to think in anthropological terms when observing cultural behavior

If I do not find the use of Welsch & Vivanco throughout this essay, expect to lose between 20 – 30 points.

EXAMPLE OF HOW TO USE WELSCH & VIVANCO:

If you were asked to discuss the former Soviet influence, I would expect you to define state influence and economics as described in Welsch & Vivanco; types of economy, types of jobs,  how the definition fits the description of economy among the Dolgan and Nagassan. Lastly what aspects of the Soviet economy impacted peoples of the tundras life? Marriage? Horticulture or other forms of subsistence? Health? Birth? Death? Political Organization? Kinship? Economics? Etc.

Focusing on the Soviet economy is not a part of the essay, but use this as a guide to discussing the other forms of cultural behavior listed above. It’s critical to understand the role of the USSR and Russian Federation, but your focus should be the indigenous Dolgan and Nganasan and how they were impacted by the collapse.
